    • Position: partial shade
    • Soil: fertile, well-drained soil
    • Rate of growth: slow-growing
    • Hardiness: fully hardy A pair of these tightly clipped box spheres look great flanking a set of steps, a doorway or a path. One of our recommended plants, they're perfect for planting in a large terracotta pot in a partially shady site, where the glossy, dark-green leaves provide all year foliage, interest and structure. Box are happy growing in a sunnier spot, but the combination of dry soil and full sun may encourage poor growth and leaf scorching. If you have sandy soil it is best to keep them in a partially shady spot in the garden.
    • Garden care: Ensure that the soil or compost is never allowed to dry out. Trim plants grown as hedges or topiary in mid- or late summer. If you want to maintain a really precise outline, then you can clip it twice a year - once in June, and then again in August/September. Apply a top-dressing of a balanced slow-release fertiliser such as blood, fish and bone (organic) or Growmore (inorganic) around the base of the plant in spring, making sure that none touches the leaves or stems.

Hydrangea macrophylla Runaway Bride is a compact, small to medium-sized, vigorous, deciduous shrub, extremely floriferous, with a rounded habit and semi-trailing stems. Unusually for a hydrangea, it flowers all the way along the stems instead of just at the tips, giving it the name of Garland Hydrangea.  The ovate, serrated leaves are deep green. From May to September, the shrub is covered with a profusion of pure white lace-cap flowers, often with a pale pink flush as they age; the colour is constant whatever the pH of your soil. Hydrangea Runaway Bride is excellent in large containers along a house-frontage, as well as in a border. • 2 x 500ml bottles
  • TOP BUXUS HEALTH-MIX can be used in two ways. 1. For bright green shiny leaves and to prevent fungal disease, such as Cylindrocladium With TOPBUXUS HEALTH-MIX, you can give your box plants bright green shiny leaves, preventing yellow edges and faded colours. To achieve this, treat your box plants 3-5 times during the growing season from March to October. This will also make your box plants healthier and stronger, resulting in them becoming more resistant to disease, etc.; this will particularly help to prevent fungal diseases such as Cylindrocladium. 2. To deal immediately with an acute fungal disease such as Cylindrocladium With TOPBUXUS HEALTH-MIX, you are able to immediately stop acute fungal disease such as Cylindrocladium. An acute fungal disease is immediately recognisable from the brown points that will swiftly expand to form blemishes. The most dangerous period is when there is protracted rainfall in combination with high temperatures. If you do nothing, the diseased box plant will soon start to lose its leaves and, in the worst case, if you fail to treat it, the affected branches can die, resulting in dead areas in your box plant. The diseased plants will then unfortunately have to be replaced. However, if you promptly use TOPBUXUS HEALTH-MIX after treatment, leaves will soon sprout on the diseased branches and recover. When the onset of disease is evident, immediately carry out the treatment. Under normal circumstances, one treatment is sufficient. It is extremely important to also immediately treat all of your healthy box plants. Should the warm and damp weather persist, repeat the treatment after 1 week. Thorough inspection is recommended in the future, particularly when the weather is warm and damp for protracted periods of time. If necessary, at a later date, you can simply repeat the treatment; this means you will continue to get maximum pleasure from your box plants. Do not use above 25 degrees Celsius. Only use early in the morning or evening in warm, sunny weather Can be used in damp weather, but preferably for use on dry foliage. If seriously affected with lots of brown spots and shedding leaves, we recommend that you first prune the plants considerably and then treat them straight away with TOPBUXUS HEALTH-MIX, which will encourage rapid regrowth
  • Gro-Sure Seed Start’s natual blend of mycorrhizal fungi and friendly bacteria improves germination and establishment of seeds and young plants.
    • 25% better establishment
    • Boosts root growth
    • Locks in nutrients
    • Controls moisture
    • Contains mycorrhizal fungi and friendly bacteria
Why Use A plant treated with Seed Start can take up more water and nutrients quicker due to the larger root system. This allows the plant scope for extra growth which in turn improves root growth and benefits the whole plant. Due to the larger root section the plant can draw water from an larger area, this means in times of drought the plant will be more resilient. Bigger roots = healthier, bigger plants = higher yield and abundant blooms
    • Water is held around the seed to aid germination
    • Mycorrhizal fungi & friendly bacteria enhance root development
    • Nutrients are held in the soil and feed the plant during the establishment
    Added Wetting Agent
    • Seeds must be kept constantly moist to soften the seed shell in order for germination to take place
    • Seeds must be moist, NOT wet. Insufficient moisture or erratic watering slows down or stops the germination process. Our added wetting agent locks in moisture around the seed and therefore germination is improved
    Clinoptiloite
    • Added clinoptiloite, a natural zeolite or volcanic rock dust, contains an array of basic nutrients and its crystalline structure grabs hold of other available nutrients in the soil stopping them being leached away
    • These nutrients are available to the root system of the plant while its structure also aerates the soil. Roots need to breathe
    Vermiculite
    • Vermiculite opens up the growing medium so young roots can permeate more easily. Holding a considerable amount of moisture like a sponge it can also act as blanket to help keep seedlings warm and is particularly good for lightly covering sown seedlings
    Mycorrhizal Fungi
    • Fortified with beneficial mycorrhizal fungi which attach to the developing plants’ roots in exchange for some plant sugars. They quickly multiply forming their own extensive root supply, which absorbs nutrients and water to feed back to their host plant.
    • The plant’s absorptive root system is increased greatly and the plant is able to grow faster and stronger
    Trichoderma and Bacillus
    • Our blend of naturally occurring ‘friendly’ soil bacteria’s including trichoderma and bacillus colonise the root system. Because each pack of Seed Start contains millions of friendly bacteria they out-compete harmful soil pathogens within the soil, which cause plant diseases. It does all of this while also releasing locked up nutrients within the soil for the plants roots to uptake
A healthy, strong plant is more resistant to attack by pest, and stresses caused by heat or drought giving your plant a bigger harvest or flowering period.

A small deciduous tree that has been in cultivation in Japan for a very long time. The fresh, delicate looking foliage is almost transparent in the sunlight and the overall shape of Japanese Maples make them an excellent choice as a specimen tree in a sheltered spot. Acer Palmatum Atropurpureum is the dark purple-leaved form of the common Japanese maple with exceptionally great Autumn colour. Growing notes: Acer palmatum and its cultivars are slow growing and do not really require pruning, but will tolerate it if necessary - remove damaged, diseased or crossing branches - it is best done during the dormant months. Lower branches can be taken off to shape the canopy over time. Japanese maples all require shelter from wind to avoid wind scorch. The very fine leaved cultivars need extra protection from wind and the sun. Despite being hardy, the fresh growth can be vulnerable to frost in the Spring. They all tolerate growing in a large container, some for a very long time.
    • Cultivars with green or yellow foliage are best grown in dappled shade as full sun can scorch the leaves.
    • Cultivars with purple or red foliage require some sun to fully develop their dark colour.

Hebe (Evergreen Veronica) is an easy to grow flowering evergreen shrub native to New Zealand and South America. Hebe plants come in many sizes ranging from dwarf shrubs, suitable for planting in patio pots and rockeries, to large hebe plants that are perfect for planting in a large garden. Many varieties of Hebe flower throughout summer and autumn - some varieties of Hebe flower during the winter. Although mostly hardy, a cold English winter can kill some types of Hebe plants. Hebes especially need to be protected from strong winds. The variegated-leafed Hebes seem to be amongst those most affected by cold winds and wintery weather. Hebes are easy to propagate from cuttings.

WHERE TO PLANT A HEBE SHRUB

A Hebe is a good all year round foliage plant. Its flowers can provide colour throughout all growing seasons. Grown in mixed plantings of summer annuals the flowers of a Hebe add to the floral display whilst the shape and form of the bush give a sense of stability. Hebe can be grown as an informal hedge - but if clipped back too hard it will not produce so many flowers. The smaller hebes make good ground cover plants or add interest to a rockery. A Hebe should be planted in a well drained soil and, if possible, in a position protected from wind.

    HOW TO PLANT A HEBE

    • Before planting a Hebe soak the roots in water
    • Dig a hole twice as wide as the container that the Hebe is in.
    • Add a spadeful of compost and some general purpose fertiliser to the soil taken from the hole that you have dug.
    • Remove the plant from the pot - tap the sides and base of the container to release the Hebe.
    • Place the hebe plant into the hole.
    • Fill in the space around the plant with the soil and compost mixture and gently firm with your fingers or tread in.
    • Water in with plenty of water.
    • Mulch around the base of the plant to help to conserve moisture.
